Apartment or Condo?

Many expats who move to Bangkok ask, “What’s the difference between an apartment and a condo?” Well, in Thailand the difference is that an apartment is a block of rental units that is owned by a single owner, whether it’s an individual, family or company, whereas a condo is a block of individually owned units that can either be for sale or for rent. Both have 24 hour security and usually have facilities such as swimming pool and gym. The only other major difference is, apartments tend to have a surcharge on utility bills whereas in a condo, you pay direct to the respective utility boards. This can amount to quite a significant amount at the end of every month but on the flip side to that is, all repairs and maintenance are provided free in an apartment. That is not always the case when you deal with an individual condo owner.
