Before 2005 bankruptcy was to be used for families who were going through severe financial troubles. Unfortunately it was abused by far too many Americans who wanted to avoid paying their credit card debts. If the laws were never changed than perhaps debt settlement will never have gotten as big as it has lately. But they did and debt settlement is now the huge thing in debt relief.
