Rugs were home décor items of only the very wealthy in the early part of the 20th century. For, it was only those with large amounts of money that could afford the luxury of area rugs. And up until the 1960s, if people wanted warmth on the floor their only option was to use area rugs. Homeowners used rugs to cover as much of the floor as possible because rugs were warmer than the standard flooring of timber or tiles.

Eventually the rugs became so big that they covered entire rooms with no flooring to be seen. Using a rug to cover an entire room became a popular trend due to the warm and cozy feeling they lent to the space.
