A Quick Rug History
Rugs were home décor items of only the very wealthy in the early part of the 20th century. For, it was only those with large amounts of money that could afford the luxury of area rugs. And up until the 1960s, if people wanted warmth on the floor their only option was to use area rugs. Homeowners used rugs to cover as much of the floor as possible because rugs were warmer than the standard flooring of timber or tiles.
Eventually the rugs became so big that they covered entire rooms with no flooring to be seen. Using a rug to cover an entire room became a popular trend due to the warm and cozy feeling they lent to the space.

Is It A Carpet Or A Rug?
Homeowner regularly refer to carpets as area rugs and vice versa but this is wrong. There are practical differences between the two. In the carpeting fraternity, the phrase area rug means a floor covering that can be simply removed; on the other hand carpeting means a fixed floor covering. Both sorts of floorings, however, are similarly made.
The value of carpets and area rugs are determined by their piles, which in essence is the number of threads woven per square inch. The larger the number of threads per square inch, the denser it is and the higher it is valued. Thus expensive plush carpeting consists of thousands of fibers per square inch.

Which Portrait Painting is Worth Your Money?
June 13th, 2008 — Decorating, Family, General, Helpful, Home, Home Improvement
When buying fine art of your home or for personal collection, it is best to clearly define or determine your purpose. The reasons why people buy art fall into either of these categories: decorative, collection, or investment. Each of these has its own worth be it emotional or monetary.
Decorative art as the name implies are usually used to enhance the overall look of any environment. Art pieces that belong in this category are rarely originals by famous painters. Because of these, they generally possess little intrinsic value; thus it is not a lucrative investment.
Collectable works are not long-term investment worthy. Art pieces that belong in this category may be original or fine art reproductions. It is therefore not right to engage in art collection if you are thinking that you will have a great deal, in terms of monetary value, for your collection. Collectable art pieces are bought because they will surely have a ready buyer or audience in the future once you decide to sell them in the future.
Investment portrait painting is recognized for its quality and uniqueness. They will always fetch a handsome price from an avid art collector, investor, or dealer. Their rare qualities make them worthy of anybody’s money.

Curtains are just one of the many window treatments that you can use to decorate your home.
October 31st, 2007 — Decorating, Home
Home decorating and redecorating is not complete until you choose the window treatments. There are a variety of options to choose from. Curtains used to be the only option that homeowners had. Now, there are a variety of window treatments to choose from. Sheers are lighter and more transparent than curtains. They allow more light to enter the room. Blinds are a popular choice. They can be opened and closed. When open, they allow sunlight to fill the room. When closed, they offer darkness. They are great for people who sleep during the day. They make sleeping at night possible when streetlights shine directly into your bedroom window. Valances are popular. They are used to dress the top of the window only. This allows you to use them alone or in combination with curtains, sheers, or blinds.
Interior Design notes
October 22nd, 2007 — Decorating
The whole program of “licensing” people in an industry that does not REQUIRE it to get a building permit was silly from day one. All it did was add a few fancy letters to a persons name and exclude a few really talented people from the “click”. In the end, those really talented people made new titles for themselves and went on designing, and let the organization clicksters fight it out. How do you quantify a persons ability to design anyway? It would be like qualifying artists, in which case the mundane “book learned” experts would be certified, while guys like Warhol, Max and Picasso would shrug it off and go on doing art. When it comes down to it, the whole certification gig was a sad recognition that art deco interior design had transcended into an industry and was no longer an art form.
Sewing a shower curtain
October 21st, 2007 — Decorating
I have a question for a shower curtain I am going to sew about the seam when the two panels are sewn together.
This all should be easy enough but should I have a panel in the middle with the two sides sewn to the panel making two seams in the shower curtain or should I sew the two panels together and cut the rest off of each side so there’s only one seam in the middle?
And how would you finish off the seam if you don’t have a serger? And a question on matching prints: do you just simply line up the dots that are in the selvedge edge? Sorry for all of the questions )-:

My worst nightmare — installing fiberglass shower drains!
August 24th, 2007 — Decorating, Home, Home Improvement
We recently decided to remodel our outdated bathroom. We thought we were coming along nicely until it came to installing fiberglass shower drains. The first thing we discovered was that we didn’t have the proper tools for the job, so a second trip to the hardware store was required. Then when we started assembling the drain, we tightened things a little too hard, I guess and a piece cracked, so back to the hardware store again. Just as we thought we had it all together, we discovered a few “extra” pieces lying on the floor. Then, according to instructions, we gathered together all of the pipes and for some reason, they didn’t all fit together properly. (Perhaps due to the ummm, experience of the amateur plumbers?) After several hours of frustration, we put the project aside to be continued the next day (when the “real” plumber arrived).
